Vacation Alerts

You can set up vacation threshold alerts that will notify you if the daily usage at your vacant property exceeds the threshold you specify between the start and end dates you select.

If you receive a vacation threshold alert, login to the Customer Portal and select Consumption from the menu on the left.  Use the Monthly, Daily, and Hourly views to review the usage at your property.  The information on this page will help you determine when and how much water is being used while your property is vacant.

If you cannot identify an explanation for the water consumption at your vacant property, please contact your property manager or other local contact and ask them to take the following steps:

  • Walk the inside and outside of the property and listen for running water at each fixture.
    • Common sources of leaks in the home include toilets, faucets, showerheads, hose bibs and landscape irrigation.
    • Less obvious sources of leaks include water heaters, ice makers, dishwashers, water softeners, and filtration systems.
  • If you suspect that there is a running toilet, drop a dye tablet (available at the District at no cost) or a few drops of food coloring into the toilet tank.  Wait at least 30 minutes.  If the dye has run into the bowl, the toilet has a leak.
  • Check the crawl space for running water.
  • Turn off the shut-off valve at the home.  Leave the water off for a few hours to help identify if the potential leak is at the home or at the main water line.
  • If the origin of the abnormal consumption cannot be identified, contact the property manager or a plumber for assistance.  If a water shut off at the meter is needed in order to complete a repair, please contact the District at support@mcwd.dst.ca.us or 760-934-2596 during regular business hours.  Please do not call the after-hours phone line unless you are experiencing an emergency.
